ALBANY, NY (05/30/2013)(readMedia)-- Glenn Metsch-Ampel of Manhattan and Harriet R. Weinberger of Brooklyn were honored with the 2013 Howard A. Levine Award for Excellence in Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare given by the Committee on Children and the Law of the New York State Bar Association.

The award, presented on May 29th at the State Bar Center in Albany, recognizes individuals who have done outstanding work protecting and promoting the rights of New York's children.

"With sensitivity and compassion, Glenn Metsch-Ampel and Harriet Weinberger have fought for the rights of thousands of children in New York. Because of their work, children and families have achieved better outcomes in life," said Karen Fisher Gutheil of Manhattan (The Legal Aid Society in New York City, Juvenile Rights Practice), chair of the committee. "It is an honor to recognize these two dedicated public servants."

Metsch-Ampel has been with Lawyers for Children since 1992. He began his career as a staff attorney and director of development. He became deputy executive director in 1999. He was the driving force behind the Transition Planning Court in New York County Family Court, which serves the needs of adolescents aging out of foster care. He also serves on the Family Court Advisory Committee for the First Department.

Weinberger has been director of the Attorney for Children Program for the Appellate Division, Second Department since 1989. She oversees the work of 500 attorneys in 10 counties. She is a member of the State Bar's Committee on Children and the Law and Family Law Section, as well as the New York City Family Court Advisory Council, and the New York State Law Guardian Task Force.

The 76,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in 1876.
