Good Gov't Groups Urge Ethic Review Com'n to Recommend Changes toi Ethics Laws
Authorizing Statute Mandates Regulatory and Statutory Changes
NEW YORK, NY (10/20/2015)(readMedia)-- Today, four good government groups - Citizens Union, Common Cause/NY, League of Women Voters New York and NYPIRG - sent the accomnpanying letter to the Ethics Review Commission. The text of the letter follows:
Dear Members of the Review Commission,
Our groups write to urge you to follow the statutory mandate to include "administrative and statutory recommendations" in your report. We believe that any authorizing language accompanying the establishment of your commission which seeks to narrow the scope of your inquiry and recommendations contradicts the clear statutory mandate and is not binding. We agree with the position set forth in New York City Bar Association Committee on Government Ethics's October 16 letter that "JCOPE's reluctance to act on reforms that are already within its power strongly reinforces the need for the more significant structural legislative changes."
Respectfully,
Dick Dadey, Citizens Union
Susan Lerner, Common Cause/NY
Barbara Bartolett, League of Women Voters
Blair Horner, NYPIRG
