Gov. Paterson, Sen Majority Leader Smith & Speaker Silver to Join Environmentalists at Earth Day Lobby Day

New Yorkers Call on State Leaders to Advance Environmental Community's Priority "Super Bills" on May 5th

ALBANY, NY (05/01/2009)(readMedia)-- Governor David Paterson, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver will join environmental groups and concerned New Yorkers on Earth Day Lobby Day, marking the first time that all three state leaders have all spoken at the annual gathering. Environmental Conservation Committee Chairs Senator Antoine Thompson and Assemblyman Robert Sweeney will also speak to environmentalists, who are coming from across the state to attend the event. The morning program will include issue briefings from environmental leaders on the 2009 priority bills.

WHO:

Governor Paterson, Senate Majority Leader Smith, Assembly Speaker Silver, Senator Thompson and Assemblyman Sweeney will speak to 200 New Yorkers committed to protecting the state's air, land and water.

WHAT:

Earth Day Lobby Day is the State Capital's largest annual environmental event. An estimated 200 people from across the state will come to Albany to lobby state legislators on critical issues affecting our air, land, water and health. This year's Earth Day agenda will focus on the environmental community's 2009 Super Bills, which include capping global warming emissions, protecting wetlands, recycling electronic waste, and restoring the public's right to enforce environmental review laws. The groups will also thank legislators for enacting the Bigger Better Bottle Bill, which has been a high environmental priority for the past seven years.

NOTES:

VISUALS: In addition to the leaders, Michele Segerberg and Kelly Martin of "Wildlife Alive" will bring a Great Horned Owl, a Red Tailed Hawk and a Northern Harrier to make the case for preserving New York's rich natural heritage and wildlife habitat. There will also be banners and displays.

SPEAKERS: The morning program will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. Speakers will include Speaker Silver at 10:45 a.m., Governor Paterson at 11 a.m., and Majority Leader Smith at 11:15 a.m., followed by Assemblyman Sweeney and Senator Thompson.
