ALBANY, NY (01/28/2010)(readMedia)-- Governor David A. Paterson today announced the appointment of Justice John C. Egan to the Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department and the nomination of Mark R. Dwyer to the Court of Claims.
"I am proud to appoint and nominate such a talented jurist and attorney to serve on our courts," Governor Paterson said. "Their experience and dedication will be a tremendous addition to New York's highly accomplished and respected Courts."
Justice John C. Egan, Jr. was elected a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, Third Judicial District, in 2005. He previously served as an Albany City Court Judge from 1997 to 2005. While in private practice from 1980 to 1996, he concurrently was assistant corporation counsel in the City of Albany, Department of Law from 1981 to 1996. Justice Egan graduated from Albany Law School and Bryant College. The Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department is located in Albany. The Governor's designation to the Third Department is not subject to Senate confirmation.
The annual salary for Justices of the Appellate Division is $144,000.
Mr. Mark R. Dwyer has worked in the New York County District Attorney's Office since 1977. He has served as Chief of the Appeals Bureau from 1985 to the present and as Counsel to the District Attorney from 1999 to the present. From 1980 to 1985, he was the Deputy Chief of the Appeals Bureau. From 1977 to 1980, he was an Assistant District Attorney and was a writing instructor at New York University School of Law in 1976. Upon graduating from law school, Mr. Dwyer served as law clerk to the Hon. Thomas Platt, a judge in the United States District Court in the Eastern District. Mr. Dwyer is a graduate of Princeton University, B.A., 1972 and Yale Law School, J.D., 1975.
The annual salary of a Court of Claims Judge is $136,700. This nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
