Granbury Residents Demand Answers from MARA's Bitcoin Mine As Lawsuit Over Noise Nuisance Continues
Texas state court rejected MARA's dismissal bid, now residents are demanding that the Cryptomine turn over documents
GRANBURY, TX (09/03/2025) (readMedia)-- Today, Citizens Concerned About Wolf Hollow, a community group composed of Granbury residents and represented by Earthjustice, filed a motion to compel in its lawsuit against MARA Holdings, Inc, asking the Texas State Court to require the cryptomining plant to turn over key information pertaining to the excessive noise the facility creates and the resulting nuisance level conditions. This comes on the heels of the Court denying MARA's motion to dismiss earlier this summer, a decision which allows the community group to move forward in the lawsuit. The cryptomining company has withheld basic information and documentation related to the excessive noise generated by its 24/7 cryptocurrency mining operations-noise that has caused ongoing harm to the surrounding community. Now, the community group is demanding answers, seeking much needed information including the equipment used at the plant, any mitigation measures the company has taken, and detailed noise pollution data.
In October 2024, a group comprised of Granbury community members filed a lawsuit in Texas State Court against MARA, alleging the company's cryptomine facility creates a private nuisance by causing and then failing to mitigate excessive noise pollution that is directly harming local neighbors. Proof-of-work cryptocurrency mining is an energy-intensive process involving tens of thousands of large computers running 24/7, and the constant roar of fans used to cool the machines results in excessive noise pollution. Residents complain of lack-of-sleep and reduced ability to enjoy their properties both outside and inside their homes as a consequence of the constant barrage of noise and vibrations. Others allege that they now suffer from severe migraines, ringing in the ears, and dizziness.
"For some time now, Granbury residents have endured the constant, harmful noise from MARA's cryptomining plant. Now, those same long-term residents are being ignored as MARA refuses to hand over documents in the discovery process, even after the Court ruled that Citizens Concerned About Wolf Hollow can bring this lawsuit. MARA must be compelled to release critical information about its operations, which have already caused serious harm to its neighbors," said Rodrigo CantĂș, Senior Attorney with Earthjustice's Gulf Regional Office.
MARA operates its bitcoin mining facility behind-the-meter at the Wolf Hollow gas plant in Granbury. The gas plant is a 1,115 megawatt combined-cycle gas and steam turbine generation facility, with plans to bring an additional 300 megawatts of gas-fired generation online. Earthjustice is seeking a permanent injunction, demanding that the cryptomine implement measures to significantly reduce the harms caused by the excessive noise and vibrations.
