WALLA WALLA, WA (01/23/2013)(readMedia)-- Grand Junction native Chase Martin recently received an Abshire Award to fund an upcoming research project on the interactions between the native peoples of the Aleutian Islands and their volcanically-active environment. He will be working with Kirsten Nicolaysen, Whitman College's Associate Professor of Geology, to compile data involving the area's geological history and the natives' relationship with the active volcanism.

Martin is the son of Mike and Pat Martin from Grand Junction, CO. He is a 2010 graduate of Fruita Monument High School.

At Whitman, Martin is a junior chemistry-geology combined major, co-president of Whitman's Whitewater club, and an avid climber and cyclist.
