Former Major League Baseball great Ken Griffey, Sr.

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (09/12/2014)(readMedia)-- Former Major League Baseball great Ken Griffey, Sr., will speak at the Flagler College Crimson & Gold Banquet Sept. 25 in the former Hotel Ponce de Leon's dining hall. The event starts at 6 p.m. with a social and a silent auction. The dinner follows at 7 p.m.

Griffey's career spanned an impressive 19 years, beginning with his first nine seasons as outfielder for the "Big Red Machine," the moniker given to the Cincinnati Reds in the mid-1970s. He also had stints with the New York Yankees, the Atlanta Braves, and the Seattle Mariners, where he played with his son, Ken, Jr. He helped lead the Reds to two World Series titles (1975 and 1976) by batting .305 and .336, respectively. He finished his career with a .296 batting average, 152 home runs and 200 stolen bases in 2,097 games. He was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2004.

Proceeds from the banquet benefit the Flagler College Athletics Scholarship Fund.

"This event is crucial to our athletic program," said Jud Damon, Flagler College Director of Athletics. "It's always a great evening, and it's rewarding for everyone involved because it gives guests an opportunity to be directly involved in scholarships that go straight to our student athletes."

Tickets for the Crimson & Gold Banquet are $75, which includes raffle, dinner and drinks. A corporate table for eight can be purchased for $750 and includes recognition in the banquet program. The event takes place the evening prior to the popular Flagler College President's Golf Classic, a four-person team tournament played this year on the newly-renovated Dye's Valley course at TPC Sawgrass.

Flagler College is a private, four-year comprehensive college located in St. Augustine, Fla. The college offers 29 majors, 34 minors and two pre-professional programs - the largest being business administration, communication, psychology and education. Small by intent, Flagler College has an enrollment of about 2,500 students, as well as a satellite campus at Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, Fla. U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review regularly feature Flagler as a college that offers quality education at a relatively low cost. A Flagler education is less than half the cost of similar private colleges, and competitive with many state universities. A relatively young institution (founded in 1968), Flagler College is also noted for its historic beauty. The centerpiece of the campus is the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, a grand resort built in 1888 by Henry M. Flagler, an industrialist, railroad pioneer and co-founder of Standard Oil. The Ponce has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. For more on Flagler College, visit www.flagler.edu.
