Groups to Call on Gov. Paterson to Reinstate NYSDEC Top Cop Grannis, Call on Next Gov to Repair Agency

ALBANY, NY (10/22/2010)(readMedia)-- Advocates representing environmental, conservation and good government groups will call on the Paterson Administration to reinstate Alexander "Pete" Grannis as Commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation today. According to press reports, Grannis was fired in response to the leak of an internal memo that revealed how proposed budget cuts will impact the agency's ability to protect New York's environment.

Press reports suggest that Pete Grannis was fired in response to the leak of an internal memo (http://www.eany.org/news/dec_dobletter_2010.pdf) that reveals how the latest round of proposed budget and staff cuts will imperil the DEC’s ability to monitor air and water pollution, clean up toxic oil and chemical spills, and keep an eye on out hazardous waste disposal and storage, among dozens of other critical functions. The groups are urging the Governor to reinstate Grannis immediately and are calling on the next governor to repair the beleaguered agency.
