HAPPENING AT 5:30: "Fiesta Sukkot" to Bring Jewish and Latino Communities, Elected Officials Together

JCRC-NY and the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights & Inwood will lead the celebration highlighting the themes of housing, food insecurity, and immigration

MANHATTAN, NY (09/30/2026) (readMedia)-- The Jewish Community Relations Council of New York and the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights & Inwood will be holding a "Fiesta Sukkot" at 5:30 today to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Sukkot during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Sukkot is a weeklong holiday that commemorates the forty-year period during which the people of Israel were wandering in the desert, living in temporary shelters called sukkot, or "huts". It is also a celebration of the fall harvest and a time to show gratitude for the food on our tables. The need for secure shelter and places of refuge and sustenance provided by the harvest are among the central themes of the holiday.

As part of Wednesday's celebration, hosts and attendees will draw connections between these central themes with present-day issues confronting Jewish and Latino communities in New York-housing and food insecurity and unjust immigration enforcement.
