The Washington Youth Summit on the Environment (WYSE) is a ground-breaking collaboration between the National Geographic Society, the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, and George Mason University. Outstanding high school students from across the United States have gathered in Washington, D.C. for an intensive academic conference that will inspire and prepare them to be leaders in conservation, environmental science and policy, and sustainability.
Also in the video, Dr. J. Shukla, George Mason University Professor of Meteorology and a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore, urges the delegates attending WYSE, "Our planet is in peril...work hard, start a movement to take back the planet."
WYSE is a highly competitive program. Just 125 rising high school seniors were selected as delegates representing their cities, states, and high schools. Delegates were selected or nominated based on demonstrated leadership and interest on environmental issues in addition to academic excellence.
