Hampden-Sydney Students Receive Gilman Scholarships for Study Abroad

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/31/2013)(readMedia)-- Two Hampden Sydney College students, Jahangir Iqbal and Edward Park, have been selected recipients of the Gilman Scholarship for international study in the Fall semester of 2013.

An Allan Scholar and rising junior, Jahangir is a member of the Future Educators Club, the German Club, Circle K, the Computer Science Club, the International Club, and the Jongleurs (theatre arts). At Final Convocation in April he was the recipient of the Macon Reed Award for his achievements in mathematics. A mathematics and computer science major, Jahangir is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology and is the son of Mr. Jahangir Iqbal of Sterling. He will be studying in Suzhou, China in the Fall.

A Patrick Henry Scholar and rising junior, Edward serves as Secretary of the International Club and is a member of the German Club, the Chess Club, the Animation Club, and the professional scientific fraternity Alpha Chi Sigma. A physics major, Edward is a graduate of First Colonial High School and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Kyung Park of Virginia Beach. He is currently visiting South Korea in preparation for his Fall semester in Seoul.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. The Bureau fosters mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries to promote friendly, sympathetic, and peaceful relations. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. The Gilman Scholarship Program provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Over 2,300 scholarships of up to $5,000 were awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad.

A college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top 100 of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its Rhetoric Program which stresses excellence in writing and speaking, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the development of young men.
