HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (03/29/2012)(readMedia)-- Christopher Ryan Thompson, a sophomore at Hampden-Sydney College, is one of the ten students selected to receive a VFIC/Altria Leadership Scholarship for 2012-2013. These scholarships are made possible by generous donations from Altria and are administered by The Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC). This prestigious award provides $10,000 in scholarship funding - $5,000 for his junior year and an additional $5,000 for his senior year.

Christopher was nominated by Dr. Christopher B. Howard, President of Hampden-Sydney College, during the second semester of his sophomore year. Demonstration of leadership potential; and career, work, and life skills; a declared major; and a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average are among the criteria required for selection.

A biology major, Christopher plays offensive line on the varsity football team. He is a graduate of Norfolk Christian High School and is the son of Marietta Thompson and Lonnie White, both of Norfolk.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the needs of young men.
