CHARLESTON, SC (11/05/2012)(readMedia)-- Cadet Michael Cain Griffin of Hanahan, S.C., is the recipient of a 2012 Col. Loring K. Himelright Scholarship for outstanding civil engineering students.

Presented during The Citadel's Homecoming Weekend Nov. 3, the award recognizes an outstanding first class (senior) cadet majoring in civil engineering for an exemplary record of academic achievement. Himelright is the former head of the civil engineering department. The award was created upon his retirement in 1981.

"The School of Engineering is blessed to have many extremely talented engineering students," said Dean Ronald Welch. "However, Cadet Griffin not only fulfills all of the criteria, he exemplifies the spirit of professionalism that Himelright demanded of Citadel civil engineering graduates during his tenure as department head. We congratulate Cadet Griffin on his current and future successes."

During his six semesters at The Citadel, Griffin's record of academic achievement includes Gold Stars for one semester and the Dean's List Award for an additional five semesters. He is an instructor in the School of Engineering's supplemental instruction program in Statics, Mechanics of Materials, and Structural Analysis. His success in this program contributed to its expansion into a tutoring program available to all Citadel engineering freshmen.

Griffin is currently serving as treasurer of the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He recently represented the chapter at the ASCE annual meeting in Montreal, Canada, to officially accept the Robert Ridgway Award, the top national award for ASCE student chapters. Griffin was instrumental in the design and construction of The Citadel's Concrete Canoe for 2011-2012 and is serving as the Concrete Canoe captain for the current school year. He is leading the other student chapter members in an effort to qualify for the National Concrete Canoe Competition for the first time ever. He has already traveled to Reno, Nev., this past summer to observe the 2012 National Concrete Canoe Competition, select a theme for this year's canoe, and work on a canoe design.

Griffin serves as Palmetto Battery athletic officer and has served as a squad sergeant, recruiting sergeant, corporal, and squad corporal within the Corps of Cadets.
