Havertown Resident Receives Scholarship to Study in Scotland

PHILADELPHIA, PA (04/11/2013)(readMedia)-- The Saint Andrew's Society of Philadelphia has awarded Emily Miller, a Saint Joseph's sophomore from Havertown, Pa., the Cmdr. George C. McFarland Scholarship, granting her $20,000 to study at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. This award marks the fourth consecutive year an SJU student has received a scholarship from the Saint Andrew's Society.

"This is the chance of a lifetime," says Miller, an English and communication studies double major. "The McFarland Scholarship covers all costs associated with studying abroad, providing a multitude of academic opportunities. Edinburgh is home to both the National Library of Scotland and the oldest English department in the U.K. These resources will help me tailor my study to my honors thesis, which will focus on gender and sexuality in literature."

Miller will pay particular attention to the works of Jeanette Winterson, a British author who writes about LGBT issues. "I'm interested in how her gender and sexuality affected her work, as well as post-modern literature," she says.

"The Saint Andrew's Society scholarship is a wonderful opportunity and Ms. Miller is highly deserving of the award," says Peter Norberg, Ph.D., chair and associate professor of English. "Her year at Edinburgh will allow her to study in depth a group of writers who will be the focus of her senior thesis project in English. She will be an exceptional representative of Saint Joseph's University."

Founded in 1958 to promote understanding between the United States and Scotland, the Saint Andrew's Society invites 18 colleges and universities in the Philadelphia region to submit a scholarship candidate to spend his or her junior year at one of four Scottish universities.

"I look forward to studying at the University of Edinburgh because of its teaching style and its reputation for academic rigor," says Miller. "My experience studying abroad will fuel my interest in literature and set me on the path to graduate school."

This will be Miller's first time traveling outside of North America. In addition to taking classes at the university, she anticipates traveling in Europe.
