NEW YORK, NY (01/21/2026) (readMedia)-- This morning, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) finalized a new rule banning hidden junk fees on hotel stays. The rule requires hotels to clearly disclose the total cost of a stay, including all mandatory fees, as well as any required credit card deposits or holds. The Hotel Association of New York City (HANYC) has long supported efforts to protect hotel customers, including the Federal Trade Commission's policy on junk fees on which this rule is based. HANYC continues to promote full transparency in hotel pricing prior to booking.
Statement from Vijay Dandapani, president and CEO of the Hotel Association of New York, who attended today's announcement:
"The hotel industry strongly supports rules to prevent hidden fees and to protect our customers, and has been outspoken about this issue in the past. We will work with the Mamdani administration to ensure that these new rules achieve those goals while also ensuring that hotels which do obey the law and treat customers fairly are not unduly affected."
