Hunter Gibson Receives Final Convocation Awards at Hampden-Sydney College

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/10/2013)(readMedia)-- At Final Convocation on April 25, Hampden-Sydney College sophomore Hunter Willem Gibson received both the Willard F. Bliss History Award, presented by Dr. John C. Coombs, Associate Professor of History, and the Sophomore Academic Excellence Award, presented by Dean Christa D. Fye, Associate Dean for Academic Support.

The Bliss Award, established in 1983 by C. Willard Hart, Jr. '49 in memory of his stepfather and history professor Willard F. Bliss, is presented to the sophomore history major who demonstrates the most potential and enthusiasm for the study of history.

The Sophomore Academic Excellence Award recognizes the sophomore with the highest grade-point average.

A Patrick Henry Scholar, Hunter plays varsity golf and is a member of the social fraternity Kappa Sigma. A history major, Hunter graduated from Norfolk Academy and is the son of John L. Gibson III of Virginia Beach.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the education of young men.
