ICYMI: Must-Watch Video Reveals How Crypto Boom in the Industry's "Wild West" is Devastating Texas Communities
The More Perfect Union investigation features Earthjustice deputy managing attorney Mandy DeRoche and impacted Granbury, TX residents represented by Earthjustice in battle against local cryptominer.
NEW YORK, NY (07/25/2025) (readMedia)-- Yesterday, More Perfect Union released a new video on the public health, environmental, and economic consequences of the unchecked cryptomining boom in Texas. Mandy DeRoche, deputy managing attorney for the Clean Energy Program at Earthjustice, was featured prominently in the video, sharing her expertise on how the lack of regulations have enabled wealthy cryptomining and tech companies to pollute local communities with noise, air, and water pollution-often using climate-killing fossil fuels-and raise electricity rates for everyday Texans. Texas politicians continue to incentivize cryptomining in their state, putting crypto profits over the public good.
To illustrate how cryptomining operations are devastating Texas communities, More Perfect Union interviewed several Granbury, TX residents suffering severe health complications from the nearby Marathon Digital cryptomine. Marathon mines Bitcoin 24/7, fueled by the Wolf Hollow II dirty gas plant. The facility creates incessant, debilitating noise pollution and local air and water pollution. Earthjustice, on behalf of the Citizens Concerned About Wolf Hollow, sued the cryptominer last year, alleging the company created a private nuisance with its excessive noise and vibrations that resulted in sustained harm to surrounding residents. On July 23, the court denied the company's motion to dismiss the case. The people of Granbury are one step closer to having their day in court.
In the video, Cheryl Shadden, an impacted Granbury resident and member of Concerned Citizens About Wolf Hollow, the plaintiff in the lawsuit, showed how high the noise levels from the cryptomine are from her home-well above what is considered reasonable in Texas. Some examples of the health consequences of this sustained low-frequency noise pollution include diminished hearing, severe migraines, insomnia, tinnitus, and debilitating vertigo. Animals in the community are suffering as well.
Earthjustice continues to defend communities across the country impacted by these new large loads like cryptomines and data centers.
