POTSDAM, NY (11/09/2016)(readMedia)-- Community Performance Series will present the folk legend Arlo Guthrie in concert on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music. Guthrie will be joined by his five-piece band.
As Guthrie's "Running Down the Road Tour" hits Potsdam, the iconic artist will perform the best of his catalogue from the late '60s to early '70s. The concert will feature the most outstanding cuts from his albums, "Arlo" (1968), "Running Down the Road" (1969) and "Washington County" (1970), along with many others.
Arlo will be joined by longtime contributors, bandmates and kin. The group's current roster includes Abe Guthrie on keyboards and supporting locals, Terry A La Berry on drums, Steve Ide on guitar and Carol Ide on percussion, keyboards and supporting vocals.
"It's very exciting to have Arlo Guthrie returning to Potsdam after so many years. With the current resurgence of popular folk, it will be a very unique experience, as the original generation comes together with the current, to enjoy one of the legends," CPS Interim Operations Director Jason L. Dominie said.
Arlo Guthrie has been known to generations as a prolific songwriter, social commentator, master storyteller, actor and activist. Born in Coney Island, N.Y., in 1947, he is the eldest son of Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington's Disease, and the beloved American singer/writer/philosopher/artist, Woody Guthrie. Arlo himself has become an iconic figure in folk music in his own right, with a distinguished and varied career spanning over 50 years.
Growing up Guthrie, Arlo was surrounded by such renowned artists as Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Ronnie Gilbert, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, to name only a few. Not surprisingly, Arlo drew from these influences and he in turn became a delineative figure, bridging generations of folk. He and Pete Seeger created a legendary collaboration that was sustained for more than 40 years. The last Pete & Arlo show was held in 2013 at Carnegie Hall, only a few months before Seeger passed away at the age of 94.
