Inaugural Lecture on January 24 Features Elizabethtown College President

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (01/12/2012)(readMedia)-- The Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President continues to host the Inaugural Lecture Series, commemorating the inaugural year of the College's 14th president. The first lecture of 2012, slated for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, features President Carl J. Strikwerda, who will present "The World at the Crossroads: From the Great War to Globalization." Globalization going on in the world today is not new. The period between 1880 and 1914 represents the first era of the phenomenon, with World War I ending that wave.

"Globalization happened before and ended badly with the outbreak of the First World War," said Strikwerda. "The impact of globalization is felt much more keenly today and we need to learn from history if our generation in the 21st century is to do better than what transpired a century ago."

The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in Room 212 of the James B. Hoover Center for Business. Strikwerda will speak for approximately 45 minutes, followed by a reception. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Other upcoming events in the Inaugural Scholarship Series feature Dr. Carmine Sarracino, English, presenting "Life, Point Blank: War as a Metaphor for Ordinary Life," Tuesday, Feb. 21, and Dr. Jane Cavender, Biology, presenting "The T antigen Onco-protein: Inducing Cell and Student Transformation," Tuesday, March 27. Both sessions begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 212 of the James B. Hoover Center for Business.
