International Nonprofit Honors Norfolk Businessman

NORFOLK, VA (09/08/2011)(readMedia)-- This fall, Physicians for Peace is recognizing one of Norfolk's great philanthropists and businessmen, Harvey L. Lindsay, Jr., with its 2011 Presidential Award. Lindsay, chairman of Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate, will accept the honor on Oct. 15 during the 2011 Physicians for Peace Gala in Norfolk, Va.

"With characteristic humility, wisdom and good humor, Harvey has been a longtime, dedicated supporter of Physicians for Peace," said Brig. Gen. Ron Sconyers (USAF, Ret.), president and chief executive officer of Physicians for Peace. "Over the years, his generous financial gifts have mobilized life-changing volunteer healthcare missions around the world. He's been a true champion for our organization."

A History of Service

Through the years, Lindsay has stepped forward to support the organization in myriad ways, as a donor, friend and advocate. Thanks to his friendship with Dr. Charles E. Horton Sr., the founder of Physicians for Peace, Lindsay's affiliation with Physicians for Peace dates back more than 20 years, and the consistent financial gifts of Lindsay and his wife, Frances, have empowered Physicians for Peace to plan missions and build meaningful healthcare education programs in underserved areas around the world.

"It's an honor to receive the 2011 Presidential Award and to be part of Physicians for Peace," Lindsay said. "When I served in the Korean War, I saw firsthand how much people in the world could benefit from better healthcare aid and education. I'm a firm believer in our ability to 'build peace and international friendships' around the world, and that's why I support Physicians for Peace."

In addition to his financial support, Lindsay has twice served as the chairman of the group's gala, ensuring the success of the signature fundraiser both years, and for years to come. As a respected community leader, Lindsay also has been a key "connector" for Physicians for Peace, in Hampton Roads and around Virginia, offering his personal endorsement of the group and inspiring new partnerships and support circles with other organizations and individuals.

A graduate of the University of Virginia, Lindsay is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Norfolk Junior Chamber of Commerce; the Service to Mankind Award from the Norfolk Sertoma Club; the First Citizen's Award from the City of Norfolk; and the Humanitarian Award from the Catholic Charities of Southeastern Virginia, among many other honors. He currently serves on the Board of the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation and the Board of Directors of the Harbor's Edge Charitable Foundation. In September of this year, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Old Dominion University.

At the gala, Physicians for Peace also will honor its 2011 Medical Diplomat award winners: Josephine "Penny" Bundoc, MD, volunteer director of the Physicians for Peace-Philippines Walking Free program based in Manila; Charlie Henderson, Jr., Hampton Roads market president for Bank of America; and Emily Tinsley, MSNEd, an international burn care educator and consultant in Charlottesville, Va.
