Iowa City Cook Shows Off State Fair Pickle Prowess

DES MOINES, IA (09/03/2024) (readMedia)-- Rod Zeitler of Iowa City won First Place Overall and the Sweepstakes Award in the Famous Dave's Canned Pickles competition judged Tuesday, August 6, prior to the start of the 2024 Iowa State Fair.

George Antolik of Urbandale earned Second Place Overall and George Ellerbach of Iowa City claimed Third Place Overall.

Jacqueline Riekena of West Des Moines earned the Reserve Sweepstakes Award.

Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There were 140 divisions, 726 classes and over 6,400 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
