J.D. Power: Newer MINI Models Pack Big Appeal for Owners
As Drivers Downsize, Countryman, Coupe and Roadster Top Segments in APEAL Study
BEDFORD, N.H. (08/22/2012)(readMedia)-- The J.D. Power and Associates 2012 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study has found that more new-car buyers are downsizing, choosing fuel-efficient models over larger gas-guzzlers. In line with that trend, the fuel-sipping 2012 MINI Coupe, MINI Roadster and MINI Countryman each topped their segments in the study when it came to satisfying their owners.
J.D. Power's 2012 APEAL Study is based on evaluations from more than 74,000 purchasers and lessees of 2012-model-year vehicles after 90 days of ownership. Both all-new vehicles for the 2012 model year, the two-door MINI Coupe and its drop-top equivalent, the MINI Roadster, quickly climbed to top of the Compact Sporty Car segment in the study. The MINI Coupe features a sportier exterior compared to the regular MINI Cooper, donning a shallow-raked windshield, a helmet-shaped roof with an integral spoiler and an active rear spoiler. Meanwhile, the MINI Roadster replaces the Coupe's hardtop with a black fabric roof as the brand's first open-air two-seater.
"Both the Coupe and Roadster models let drivers enjoy MINI's signature handling in a more aggressively styled package, and that has resonated with our customers," said Marshal Cabot, general manager of MINI of Bedford, a MINI dealership in New Hampshire. "Car buyers were already attracted to the unique look of a MINI Cooper, but by continuing to expand its lineup, MINI is increasing its appeal by giving customers even more ways to stand out with their vehicle."
MINI's other leading model in the 2012 APEAL Study, the MINI Countryman, debuted for the 2011 model year as a larger, more versatile option, quickly becoming the lineup's second-best seller. In J.D. Power's Compact Crossover/SUV segment, the Countryman rated higher than competitors like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Kia Sportage to earn its recognition.
Like the Coupe and Roadster models, the 2012 MINI Countryman comes standard with a 121-horsepower four-cylinder engine, and it returns up to 35 mpg on the highway. The Countryman is also the first MINI to be available with an all-wheel-drive system, which is matched with a turbocharged 181-horsepower version of the four-cylinder powerplant. Offering up to 41.3 cubic-feet of cargo space, MINI's compact crossover offers surprising versatility as well, with four flat-folding seats and an open-wide tailgate.
MINI is combining the proven appeal of its Countryman with the allure of a sporty two-door model in its 2013 Paceman, which, except for a small patch of secret camouflage on its rear, was recently revealed on the brand's Facebook page. Arriving at dealerships next spring, the MINI Paceman has the same wheelbase and track as the Countryman, but features a lower stance and a sloping roofline. A more muscular body style further differentiates the Paceman from its Countryman sibling, but buyers will still benefit from a rear hatch and available all-wheel drive.
"The Paceman will bring versatility and capability that you simply don't see in other two-door offerings, all while featuring a sportier style," added Cabot. "Whether it's used for toting camping equipment to the lake or commuting to and from work in the snow during the winter, MINI's new Paceman will be a perfect fit for New Hampshire motorists that want to keep their ride nimble."
