JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger Condemns Federal Action to Revoke Legal Status of Half a Million Immigrants

NEW YORK, NY (03/24/2025) (readMedia)-- Last week, the Trump administration announced plans to revoke the legal status of 530,000 migrants from Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti, and Nicaragua, urging them to "self-deport" or face arrest and removal by ICE agents. The Jewish Community Relations Council of New York issued the following statement in response.

Statement from JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger:

"The federal government's decision to revoke legal status for more than half a million newly arrived individuals will cause irreparable harm for families and communities nationwide, including here in New York. This move, coupled with the administration's serious consideration of rescinding protections for thousands of Ukrainian refugees, threatens local economies and essential social services. Our K-12 public schools will suffer, as funding for teachers and critical programs is directly tied to enrollment. We cannot punish and scapegoat children and families for a broken immigration system - the result of federal inaction and indifference dating back decades. New immigration policies must not come at the expense of those who contribute to and strengthen our communities. We stand in solidarity with all immigrants and remain committed to their support."
