JCRC-NY Celebrates Julie Menin on Historic Election as City Council Speaker
Menin is the first Jewish person to serve as Speaker.
NEW YORK, NY (01/07/2026) (readMedia)-- This afternoon, the New York City Council elected Julie Menin as Speaker, making her the first Jewish Speaker in the city's history. Throughout her years in public service, Menin has fought against antisemitism and all forms of hate. She has reaffirmed this commitment, recently pledging to support legislation that protects houses of worship so antisemitic incidents like the demonstration at Park East Synagogue never happen again.
JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger was in attendance for the historic occasion.
Statement from JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger:
"JCRC-NY extends its heartfelt congratulations to Council Member Julie Menin on becoming the new Speaker of the New York City Council, making history as the first Jewish person to hold this important position. Speaker Menin, who is also the daughter and granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, continues to be a champion for Jewish New Yorkers at a critical time for our communities and a valued partner to JCRC-NY. We are grateful for her continued work combating rising antisemitism and her deep commitment to serving all New Yorkers. It was a privilege to be in attendance today, and we look forward to working with Speaker Menin as she begins her historic tenure."
