NEW YORK, NY (04/30/2026) (readMedia)-- In response to recent reports that a member of the Park Slope Food Coop made outrageous antisemitic remarks while supporting a proposed boycott of Israeli goods, JCRC-NY released the following statement:
Statement from Mark Treyger, CEO of JCRC-NY:
The language used at a general meeting of the Park Slope Food Coop included Nazi comparisons, the assignment of collective blame to Jews for geopolitical disagreements, as well as accusations of "Jewish supremacy."
This inflammatory rhetoric does not emerge in a vacuum. It is the predictable result of a sustained disinformation and demonization campaign advanced by some Coop members under the pretext of legitimate criticism of Israel. It is not. It is textbook antisemitism.
All institutions operating in New York, including the Park Slope Food Coop, remain subject to the protections and obligations enforced by the New York State Division of Human Rights and the New York City Commission on Human Rights. We urge both agencies to review these reports promptly and take appropriate action.
This is why tools like the IHRA framework are necessary for identifying and understanding classic and contemporary antisemitism.
New York's strength is rooted in diversity, pluralism, and the rule of law. Jewish members of the Coop should not be demeaned, targeted, made to feel unsafe, or subjected to collective blame because of disagreements over Middle East policy.
We must ensure accountability and uphold the standards that protect all New Yorkers, including Jewish New Yorkers.
