ALBANY, NY (01/28/2016)(readMedia)-- The Commercial and Federal Litigation Section of the New York State Bar Association has recognized Associate Justice of the Court of Appeals Sheila Abdus-Salaam with its 2016 Stanley H. Fuld Award.

The award, named for the late chief judge who served for 27 years on the Court of Appeals-six as chief judge-was presented on January 27 during the Bar Association's Annual Meeting in New York City. It is awarded for outstanding contributions to the development of commercial law and jurisprudence in New York.

"Judge Abdus-Salaam has impeccable credentials; her judicial temperament is exemplary and her contributions to the rule of law are well known," said James M. Wicks (Farrell Fritz), chair of the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section. "She epitomizes the very person after whom this award is named."

Abdus-Salaam was appointed to the Court of Appeals by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo in 2013, and previously to the Appellate Division, First Department in March 2009 by Governor David A. Paterson.

She was elected to the Civil Court of the City of New York in 1991 and began her judicial career in 1992. In 1993, she was elected to the Supreme Court, New York County, and was re-elected in 2007.

"In each of those courts, we learned that she has vast experience ruling on complex matters, including corporate and business issues, particularly in the areas of insurance, contracts and fidu¬ciary duties," Wicks said.

Past recipients of the Stanley H. Fuld award include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, former New York State Chief Judges Jonathan Lippman and Judith S. Kaye, former state Chief Administrative Judges A. Gail Prudenti and Ann T. Pfau, and U.S. District Court Judge Shira A. Scheindlin of the Southern District of New York.

The 74,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in 1876.
