HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (04/25/2013)(readMedia)-- On April 19, John M. (Jack) Boswell, Hampden-Sydney Class of 1965, was presented the James Madison Award by the Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest at Hampden-Sydney College. This award honors a friend of the College who has assisted the Wilson Center, either directly or indirectly, in carrying out its mission of civic education and public service. The 2010 James Madison Award recognizes Boswell's devotion to the College, to community service, and to the victims of social injustice.
While a student at Hampden-Sydney, Boswell was President of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity for three years and served the Inter-Fraternity Council. He was a member of the German Club, the Tiger staff, the Student Honor Council, the President's Council and the Student-Faculty Relations Committee. Boswell is one of five men in his immediate family who have attended this Hampden-Sydney, including his father, father-in-law, brother, and his son. He attended University of Richmond T. C. Williams School of Law.
More recently Boswell has served on the Parent's Council. He was instrumental in the re-colonization of Lambda Chi Alpha on campus and is presently a member of the Board of Advisors to the Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest. He has assisted the Wilson Center in drafting by-laws for the Board and has been a consultant to the Directors of both the Public Service and the National Security Studies Programs.
Boswell opened a law practice in Crewe, VA, and has been in practice for over 44 years. His current law partner, J. Larry Williamson, also graduated from Hampden-Sydney. Boswell has served as General Counsel for Southside Electric Cooperative for 40 years and has served on the Board of Directors of the Crewe-Burkeville Youth Recreation Association for 23 years. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of Southside Community Hospital, Fuqua School, and Piedmont Court Services.
Boswell was one of the founding fathers of The ALMS House, a community food pantry and shelter, and donated a building for that purpose. In 2007, Jack founded and presently manages the Medical Foundation of Burkeville, Inc., developed to sustain the local medical practice and to provide medical coverage, including prescription drugs, for those in the community who cannot afford them. The Medical Foundation has slowly grown and Boswell is responsible to a Board of Directors of seven individuals whose current plans are to secure a permanent location and to retain the services of a traveling nurse.
