HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/09/2012)(readMedia)-- At Final Convocation on April 26, Hampden-Sydney College senior John L. Gibson IV received the Etta Sawyer Hart Bliss History Award, presented by Dr. Caroline S. Emmons, Associate Professor of History. Established in 1982 by history professor Willard F. Bliss in honor of his wife, the Etta Sawyer Hart Bliss History Award is presented to the senior history major who, in the opinion of the history department, has demonstrated excellence in the study of history during his years at Hampden-Sydney.
A Venable Scholar, Jack plays defender on the varsity lacrosse team and has served as Senior Campaign Class Captain and as President of the social fraternity Kappa Sigma. He is a member of the President's Men and the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa (academics) and Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership). Jack was the recipient of the Willard Bliss History Award and has completed Departmental Honors in History and the Military Leadership and National Security Studies Program. He was recognized for leadership in the 2012 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. A history major, Jack graduated from Norfolk Academy and is the son of Mariska & John Gibson of Virginia Beach.
