SPRINGFIELD, MA (09/06/2011)(readMedia)-- James Murphy of Norwalk, CT, received first prize in the Western New England University 5th Annual Dean's Prize for Literary and Cultural Studies. Murphy's essay, entitled "Poe and the Gothic framework of Hawthorne's Romanticism," surveys the work of Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne, tracing the development of their influential narrative styles. The Dean's Prize honors the best essays written for 200-level and above courses in the area of literary or cultural criticism as judged by a panel of Department of English faculty.
