HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/10/2011)(readMedia)-- On May 8, at commencement ceremonies marking the end of the 236th academic year at Hampden-Sydney College, Janko Kajtez, Class of 2011, received the Samuel S. Jones Phi Beta Kappa Award. This award was presented by Dr. Robert T. Herdegen III, Dean of the Faculty at Hampden-Sydney College. The Phi Beta Kappa Award for Intellectual Excellence was established by Samuel S. Jones, Class of 1943, to recognize excellence as manifested in outstanding student research. Papers are entered in a competition judged by the Faculty members of the Eta of Virginia, Hampden-Sydney's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Kajtez graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in physics and applied mathematics. In April he presented his Departmental Honors research project in physics, "Mössbauer Study of Sickle Cell Hemoglobin Treated with Nitric Oxide." A Patrick Henry Scholar, Kajtez is a member of the honorary societies Phi Beta Kappa (academics) and Chi Beta Phi (science), the International Club, and the Society of Physics Students. He is a graduate of St. Mary's Ryken High School in Leonardtown, MD, and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Nenad Kajtez of Novi Sad, Serbia.
