CHESTERTOWN, MD (12/18/2012)(readMedia)-- Washington College is pleased to announce that Jared DePermentier, of Schwenksville, Pa., has finished the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association's fall season just six points out of the lead as high-point rider for the open division of Region 4-a highly competitive area that draws riders from talent-rich southeastern Pennsylvania and the Delmarva. If he can climb to first place during the spring season, "he has an automatic ride to the nationals," in May, says Chris Bigelow, Washington College's Equestrian Team coach.
DePermentier, president of the college's English hunt seat team, swept the flat and jumping classes in the last show of the fall season. His efforts helped propel the Washington College team to its best showing ever; heading into spring, it's in second place in the region and pushing hard for first.
DePermentier, who attended Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Pa., is a junior at Washington where he's pursuing a double major in business management and economics. A rider since he was seven years old, he specializes in English hunt seat and in 2008 qualified for the Devon Horse Show. He returns home frequently to train on his German Warmblood; while riding in IHSA, though, he competes on horses provided through the participating colleges.
With several business internships under his belt, DePermentier hopes to create a career that blends his business education with the sport he loves. That dual purpose never leaves his view; after a recent visit to a hugely successful stable in Chesapeake City, Md., DePermentier says he came away wanting to know: "What took them from college where I'm standing now to owning this multi-million-dollar operation and making it work? I have to figure out how to be in the sport somehow. Anyway I can I will. I know it's a tough business, but I couldn't imagine my life without riding."
Founded in 1782 under the patronage of George Washington, Washington College is a private, independent college of liberal arts and sciences located in colonial Chestertown on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
