Jasmyne Cole to Speak at College-Sponsored Conference
Marathon, N.Y. student's topic is "My Place in the World, 2010"
CAZENOVIA, NY (09/17/2010)(readMedia)-- Cazenovia College's ninth Annual Wheler Family Conference on World Affairs, Monday, Sept. 27, will feature the fourth annual Sarah Webster Memorial Addresses, at an invitation-only luncheon following the morning conference events. The conference opens at 9 a.m. in the Catherine Cummings Theatre, 16 Lincklaen St. The luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. The complete schedule is on the Net: www.cazenovia.edu/wheler.
The Webster Memorial Speakers are Jasmyne Cole, of Marathon, N.Y., from Cazenovia College; and Margaret Moreno from Corcoran High School in Syracuse, N.Y., each speaking on the subject of 'My Place in the World, 2010." The luncheon also honors Cazenovia College master students, who act as teaching assistants for First-Year Seminar classes.
Cole is a junior majoring in social science. She is a master student, and plans to go on to graduate school, with the goal of becoming a history teacher. She is a member of the Social Science Club, the Belly Dance Club, and is a master student for this year's First Year Seminar titled "Freedom for the Thought that we Hate: A History of the First Amendment."
Cole says, "My mother has been the foundation for everything that I am today. With her help, and the help of my new 'family' at Cazenovia, I was able to overcome obstacles I never thought I could. My talk will be about how my experience at Cazenovia College helped me become a more confident person in school, and in everyday life."
The Webster Memorial Addresses are named to honor Sarah Webster, a Corcoran High School alumna who died unexpectedly in 2004, and are sponsored by her parents.
Conference organizer, Dr. John Robert Greene, says, "This unique, student-centered event organizes intellectual discussion and analytical discourse via a collection of speakers and presenters to explore a variety of topics as they apply to national issues and world affairs. Jasmyne is a superb student, a teacher in the making, and her speech guarantees to inspire."
The Wheler Family Conference is made possible through the support and efforts of the Wheler Family, in particular Barbara and A. Gordon Wheler, former trustees of the College. The conference is a U.S. Constitution Day event (http://constitutioncenter.org/constitutionday).
