Jessica Hall receives 2011 Steadman Scholarship

Jessica M. Hall of Snow Shoe, Pa. is the 2011 recipient of the Charles Michael Steadman Jr. Memorial Scholarship. The Steadman Scholarship is given each year in memory of Michael Steadman, a Lock Haven University student tragically killed in an automobile accident in August, 1993. Funded by the Steadman family, the scholarship is awarded to a Lock Haven University student accepted into the University's Physician Assistant Program.

Jessica is a May, 2011 graduate of Lock Haven University. She earned the B.S. degree in Health Science with a concentration in Pre-Physician Assistant and a minor in Biology.

She stated, "I am pursuing a career as a PA because I am sincerely interested in the field of medicine and would like to utilize my interest and the knowledge I acquire to help others." Her parents are Troy and Darlene Hall of Snow Shoe.

Daniel J. Gales, associate professor and chair of the LHU Department of Health Sciences, praised Jessica's qualifications for this honor. "While at Lock Haven, Jessica has proven to be an impressive young woman. Her academic performance has been exceptional and she is very deserving of this scholarship," he said. Gales added, "On behalf of the Department of Health Science, I wish her well as she begins graduate study in the Physician Assistant program."

The Steadman Scholarship is granted to the applicant who most closely exemplifies the qualities of Michael Steadman, in whose honor the program has been established. Michael was an academically talented student with very strong interests in the field of Health Sciences. He demonstrated a deep fascination with the scientific bases of the field that went well beyond passing tests and earning grades.

Michael Steadman's personal qualities also made him particularly well suited to a career as a primary health care provider. He was personable with a quick wit and a great capacity to get along with people. Had he not lost his life so tragically, he most certainly would have continued to develop effective interpersonal relationships with patients built on trust, confidence, and competence. The ideal recipient of the Steadman Scholarship is a student who truly exemplifies the determination needed to succeed in the graduate program.

The Steadman Scholarship is funded by the CMS Foundation in Phoenixville, Pa.

Upon receiving the Steadman Scholarship, Jessica stated, "I want to thank the family of Charles Michael Steadman Jr. for creating this scholarship in memory of their son and brother. The family has such great pride for Michael and I am honored to have been selected by them as an example of the great qualities he possessed. This scholarship will help me pursue my passion for medicine the same way Michael was able to and for that I am so very grateful."

Jessica added, "I am also honored to be attending the Lock Haven University Physician Assistant Program. The program has a reputation for preparing Physician Assistant students for their professions successfully and I am looking forward to taking part in the experience of learning a great deal from the program."

Jessica will be pursuing her PA studies at the LHU main campus. Lock Haven University offers the Physician Assistant Program at its main campus in Lock Haven, at its Clearfield Campus, at the Dixon University Center in Harrisburg, and at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport.

The Lock Haven University Physician Assistant Program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The LHU Physician Assistant program has a top-25 listing in the 2012 edition of U.S. News and World Report's rankings of graduate programs.
