MILLERSVILLE, PA (06/13/2014)(readMedia)-- Jessica Hendricks, Harleysville, Pa., has been selected to receive the 2014 Irene Renshaw Scholarship. Hendricks will graduate from Perkiomen Valley High School and will attend Millersville University of Pennsylvania this fall to study early childhood education.
This award was established by Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Burke in memory of Mr. Burke's grandmother, Irene Renshaw, the first female to attend her small college in Ohio and one of the first married female teachers working at her elementary school. Mr. Burke, '99, earned his degree in speech communication and his wife Lisa, '96, was an early childhood education graduate. The award is for a student enrolling in an early education program who demonstrates an involvement in community/volunteer service or leadership. It is a non-renewable award this year of $300.
In high school Hendricks completed several courses at an honors or Advanced Placement level and was a member of the National Honor Society and a tutor in grades 11 and 12. During those years Hendricks was also involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and the Link Crew, a freshman mentoring program. She participated in club soccer in grades 10 and 11 and was a Historical Society volunteer at the Peter Wentz Farmstead throughout high school.
In her senior year she volunteered in a local elementary school in a Teacher Apprenticeship Program. She has been active in Girl Scouting since 2002-her troop organized and executed a service unit father-daughter dance for 300 guests and a mother-daughter tea party as part of their commitment to leadership and service.
