Joint Training Exercise: Resurgam

AUGUSTA, ME (08/07/2015)(readMedia)-- Next week the Portland Police Department with the 488th Military Police Company of the Maine Army National Guard will be conducting a joint training exercise in Portland to test their ability to communicate and work together with law enforcement and civil authorities in case of a natural disaster or civil emergency.

The exercise will occur on Monday, 10 August, through Wednesday, 12 August, and will be taking place in an undeveloped area off of outer Congress Street. There is not expected to be any impact to commuter traffic flow due to increased military traffic.

The 488th Military Police Company is based in Waterville and may be called upon to assist local agencies in the case of natural disasters. Other agencies involved in the training include; the South Portland Police Department, South Portland Fire Department and the Portland Regional Communications Center.

In 2012 the 488th Military Police Company deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan and conducted base security operations.

The exercise takes its name from Portland's motto, Resurgam, which is Latin for, 'I shall rise again.'
