TUCUMCARI, NM (03/30/2012)(readMedia)-- The Mesalands Community College's Rodeo Team competed in two rodeos at Central Arizona College in Florence, AZ on March 10-11, 2012, and brought home team championship titles for both the Men's and Women's Teams. As of today, the Men's Team is currently second in the nation with 7,325 points, and the Women's Team is also second in the nation with 3,082.50 points. With two rodeos remaining this season, Mesalands has a likely chance of sending two teams to the College National Finals Rodeo for the first time in the program's history.

Jordan Minor of Navasota, TX, had his chance to shine in Arizona. Minor finished second in the tie down roping event on Saturday and then on Sunday earned his first championship title of the season.

"I've had some ups and downs this season, so it feels great to be on top after working hard all season. I like the facilities at Mesalands and Coach C.J. is a huge help," Minor said. "We really have a good team."

Minor is leading the Grand Canyon Region in tie down roping and is currently eleventh in the nation.

In Arizona on Saturday, the Men's Team earned 998.50 points and two individual titles. The Women's Team earned 692 points and fourth individual titles.

On Sunday the Men's Team earned 818 points and finished in second place. The Women's Team ended the rodeo with 360 points in third place.

"Last year we sent eight students to nationals and had one of the largest groups at the rodeo. Right now we could be sending as many as 14," C.J. Aragon, Mesalands Intercollegiate Rodeo Coach said. "We have a really good team here at Mesalands, and I don't know if people realize just how good this Team is."

The next rodeo competition for the Mesalands Rodeo Team will be at Northland Pioneer College in Crownpoint, AZ, April 20-21, 2012 and the Grand Canyon Regional Finals rodeo will take place at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM on April 27-28, 2012.

"We have only two regional rodeos remaining and I would like to encourage the community to continue supporting our Rodeo Team by attending the last rodeo in Las Cruces," Dr. Mildred Lovato, President of Mesalands said. "This is our opportunity to show just how much we appreciate their outstanding performance."
