HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/18/2012)(readMedia)-- Joshua Erick Rivera, Class of 2012, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army on May 13th during commencement ceremonies marking the end of the 237th academic year at Hampden-Sydney College.
Rivera was commissioned by Major Stephan Ruppel-Lee, assisted by Master Sergeant Jeff Suttle. Pinning his gold bars were his father, Sergeant First Class Retired José Rivera, and his mother, First Sergeant Pamela Kay Rivera of El Paso, TX, previously of Midlothian, VA. Lt. Rivera received his first salute from First Sergeant Pamela Kay Rivera.
Rivera graduated with a B.A. in psychology. While at Hampden-Sydney he was a member of the ROTC program through the University of Richmond. He served on the College Activities Council and was Treasurer of the Minority Student Union and Secretary Treasurer of the Clay Target Club. His first assignment will be to attend the Field Artillery Basic Officer Leadership Course at Fort Sill, OK.
