OSWEGO, NY (04/18/2011)(readMedia)-- Joshua Valentino of Mexico, a geology major at SUNY Oswego, has received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, the highest student recognition through the State University system.
Five SUNY Oswego students were among the 350 honorees from 64 SUNY institutions across New York state recognized for high grade-point average and extraordinary contributions to the campus and community. Students graduating between June 2010 and May 2011 were eligible. SUNY Chancellor's Award recipients were honored in an April ceremony in Albany.
Valentino also received the Outstanding Graduate in Geology Award at SUNY Oswego's Honors Convocation.
The SUNY Faculty Senate twice chose Valentino's research projects for presentations at the state Capitol. He received the Top Student Award at the Great Lakes Research Consortium annual meeting, and was the only student on a panel at a New York State Geographic Information System Conference. He wrote a 15-page entry for the New York Geological Society of America field trip guidebook, was president of the campus Geology Club and received campus grants in support of his research.
He provided Web and management support for the college's Quest symposium and made four Quest presentations, receiving two Best Poster Awards, and produced seven presentations at four regional Geological Society of America conferences. He is the son of Karen and David Valentino.
Other Oswego recipients were Nicole Dean of Lansing, Michelle Hamann of Peru, Maine, Adam King of Houston, Texas, and Courtney Lupton of Central Square.
Admission to SUNY Oswego is competitive. U.S. News named it among the "Top Public Regional Universities in the North" for 2011, and the Princeton Review includes Oswego in its college guidebook "The Best Northeastern Colleges."
A 150-year-old comprehensive college in the State University of New York system, Oswego enrolls over 8,000 students in its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; School of Business; School of Communication, Media and the Arts; and School of Education.
