Kathy Thornton of Clarksville Wins George Washington Medal and Arthur A. Knapp '39 Memorial Prize

CHESTERTOWN, MD (06/07/2013)(readMedia)-- Washington College is pleased to announce that Kathy Thornton '13 of Clarksville, MD, is a recipient of the 2012-13 George Washington Medal and Award, the Arthur A. Knapp '39 Memorial Prize in History and a recipient of an outstanding community service recognition. The George Washington Medal and Award is given to a graduating senior who "shows the greatest promise of understanding and realizing in life and work the ideals of a liberal education." The Arthur A. Knapp '39 Memorial Prize recognizes "the graduating history major who, in the opinion of the Department, has displayed unusual interest, enthusiasm and ability in the field of history."

Thornton graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in environmental studies and history and a minor in biology at this Washington College's 230th commencement ceremony this May. She earned departmental honors in environmental studies and history. On campus, Thornton was a member of the Student Environmental Alliance, History Society and Habitat for Humanity, and she served as president of the Cater Society of Junior Fellows her senior year. For her Senior Capstone Experience, Thornton researched the environmental history of Kent County, focusing on the three main agricultural transitions from 1680 to 1860. She is interning with the Chester River Field Research Station this summer, after which she will work as the program coordinator with the Center for Environment and Society for a year.
