ABILENE, TX (12/20/2011)(readMedia)-- Katie Slaggle, of Seymour, Texas, was awarded the Academic Foundation Medal during the 2011 Winter Commencement exercises at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX.

The Academic Foundation Medal was established in 1999 by the Academic Foundation of Hardin-Simmons University. This medal is awarded annually at the winter commencement to the graduate who has achieved the highest grade point average, exemplifies the highest scholarly achievement, and has completed at least 90 semester hours of residence credit at Hardin-Simmons University.

Slaggle has been named to the President's List each semester she has attended HSU, and she has been honored with several academic scholarships, including the Austin Scholarship, the Trustee Scholarship and the Honor's Program Scholarship.

She demonstrated a passion for inspiring, motivating, and challenging struggling and gifted learners during two separate summer camps held at HSU. Through her development of a differentiated curriculum targeting adolescents' cognitive, social, and emotional needs, she provided engaging activities appropriate for diverse learners.

She worked diligently for several semesters researching, attending a professional conference, interviewing teachers and HSU faculty members, and processing information about gifted students in poverty. The culmination of the Honors Senior Capstone Project, Gifted Education in Low-Income Schools:  Issues and Solutions came to life during the summer camps.

Her love of Christ shines brightly wherever she is, in front of a class, in the hallway, playing summer camp games, or during a summer camp faculty meeting. A professional, a Christian, and a true friend are just a few descriptions of Slaggle by the faculty.

Slaggle is a summa cum laude graduate with a Bachelor of Behavioral Science degree in English language arts and reading, with minors in history and honors, and plans to extend her love of the Lord through the ministry of teaching.

Slaggle is the daughter of Billie and Lita Slaggle of Seymour, TX.
