ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (01/09/2014)(readMedia)-- From the Greek tragedian Sophocles to Henry David Thoreau, Gandhi and Martin Luther King, morality and integrity have been powerful tools for change that have resounded across the ages.
On Jan. 14, Flagler College Assistant Professor Brenda Kauffman will discuss the way those men used civil disobedience to inspire profound and fundamental changes to policies and norms that allow for injustices to persist.
"In an effort to harness power for just and humane purposes, extraordinary individuals have inspired generations to keenly criticize the exercise of authority in their societies and to prudently resist wrongs, discriminations, and prejudices quite often in the face of great peril," said Kauffman.
Kauffman earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from Auburn University, a Masters Degree in Liberal Arts and Philosophy from Spring Hill College, a Bachelor's in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Georgia State University, and an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from Penn State University.
The 2014 Community Lecture Series is titled "The Rights Revolution: Civil Rights, Human Rights, and Beyond" and focuses on the past, present and future of civil rights.

The centerpiece of the campus is the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, a grand resort built in 1888 by Henry M. Flagler, industrialist, railroad pioneer and co-founder of Standard Oil.
