Keigwin + Company Provides Wit, Entertainment and Intelligence

BROCKPORT, NY (02/11/2009)(readMedia)-- Keigwin + Company is a professional modern dance company committed to creating work that is entertaining as well as intelligent and innovative. The troupe will conduct a one-week residency at The College of Brockport, from February 23 through 28, which will conclude with three public performances. The performances, in Hartwell Dance Theater, Kenyon Street, are Friday, February 27 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, February 28 at 5 and 7:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased from the Brockport Student Government Box Office, (585) 395-2487.

The company was established in 2003 under the artistic direction of Larry Keigwin. Combining physicality with theatricality, the company performs provocative and witty work, always with style. The New York Times writes, "Keigwin achieves astonishing feats of dancing... a parcel of pure explosive energy mediated by impressive technical skills."

The Brockport concerts will include "Love Songs" and excerpts from "Elements," among other works. "Elements" is a four-part work-inspired by earth, fire, water and air-set to a wide range of music including Mozart, Chopin, Patsy Cline, Etta James and Perry Como. Dancing alongside the professional company will be a select group of Brockport students. "Residencies give us the opportunity to take the whole company and perform and teach," Keigwin said. "It's enriching not only for the company, but for dancers in the community and the entire community itself."

During the residency, Keigwin and members of the company will also set two pieces, "Caffeinated" and "Angels of Anxiety," on the students. "One of my missions is to bring dance to the people," Keigwin said. "I want to inspire people. I want dance to be infectious and contagious."

Following its premiere performance at Joyce SoHo in New York City, Keigwin + Company has performed in numerous venues throughout the United States, including The Duke Theater of 42nd Street, American Dance Festival, Jacob's Pillow, Summerdance Santa Barbara and Lincoln Center Out of Doors.

Larry Keigwin earned his BA in dance from Hofstra University before moving on to perform and choreograph professionally. He has choreographed and performed on Broadway, off-Broadway and for numerous dance companies including Zenon Dance Company. From 1997 - 2000, he was the associate artistic director of Dendy Dance & Theater and received a Bessie Award in 1998 for his performance in Dream Analysis. He also appeared in Julie Taymor's Academy Award-nominated film, Across the Universe.

In addition to his choreographic work with Keigwin + Company, his recent commissions include The Martha Graham Dance Company, The Juilliard Dance Ensemble and the New York City Ballet's Choreographic Institute.

Keigwin + Company's residency and performances are sponsored by the Student Dance Organization, Brockport Student Government, and The College at Brockport's Department of Dance.
