ALBANY, NY (04/08/2008)(readMedia)-- Thomas P. Komp, principal of Boulevard Elementary School in the Gloversville Enlarged School District, has been selected as the 2008 New York State Elementary School Principal of the Year by the School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS). This award is given annually to a member of SAANYS who has set the pace, character, and quality of education for the children in his or her school. Nominees are administrators who are committed to students, parents, and the community and have shown exceptional contributions to the educational process.
Komp has been an elementary-level administrator for 14 years, seven of those years in his present position in Gloversville. Boulevard Elementary is a Pre-K through 5 school with an enrollment of approximately 650 students. Prior to assuming his principalship at Boulevard, Komp was principal of McNab-Meco Elementary, also in Gloversville, and held several positions in the Chatham Central School District.
Komp holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland, a master’s in education and his SAS certification from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. He is an active member of SAANYS and the National Association of Elementary School Principals, serves as president of the Gloversville Administrative Supervisory Staff Association, and on the two-time successful Reading First Grant Writing Team. Komp is an active member of the PTA, has been a board member of the Fulton County YMCA and Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and has presented at numerous local, state, and national conferences on his building’s successful implementation of RTI (Response to Intervention). As a result of the RTI model, classification rates have dropped by 66 percent and assessment rates have improved dramatically. According to Komp, “Individual student gains have been extraordinary.”
Komp will be honored for his accomplishments at an awards ceremony on May 9, 2008 at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, New York. As New York’s Elementary School Principal of the Year, Komp is now a candidate for the award of National Elementary School Principal of the Year, an award sponsored by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). –30– SAANYS represents more than 6,900 school administrators, supervisors, and coordinators.
