ROCK ISLAND, IL (05/11/2010)(readMedia)-- Augustana is pleased to announce junior Kristin Klouda of Winfield, IL, as the Dahl Scholar for the 2010-11 academic year. Established by Augustana graduates John Dahl '68 and Robert Dahl '74 to honor their parents, Arthur and Dorothy Dahl, the scholarship is awarded to one student each year for academic achievement and student leadership.
Klouda, a theatre arts and pre-medicine major, is an active leader in the campus community. She is a community advisor on her floor in the Swanson Common's apartments, as well as a member of the track team, Martini Swingers dance troupe and the Augustana Symphony Orchestra. She has also served in severed in several leadership roles with Sigma Alpha Iota National Music Fraternity, including Joint Committee Chair and Province Day Committee co-chair. Klouda is a member of the Association of Information Technology Professionals, Augustana Football Cheerleading and Augustana Honor Council.
"Kristy is a great team player for her fellow student staff members," said Jillian Flahaven, the Residence Director of Swanson Commons. She's been a great leader for our newer staff members and has taken them under her wing in teaching them how to balance a difficult job along with their school work and extra-curricular activities."
The Dahl Scholar is chosen based on leadership in co-and extra-curricular programs as well as a good reputation among Augustana students, faculty and administrators. Flahaven believes Klouda embodies this because "she has clearly taken advantage of all the opportunities Augustana has to offer students, both academically and extra-curricular."
John Dahl and Robert Dahl, trustees of the Arthur E. Dahl and Dorothy E. Dahl Charitable Trust established by their late parents, provided for the scholarship as part of a $1,500,000 donation from the trust to Augustana in 2003. This gift funded the scholarship and underwrote construction of the Dahl President's Home. Inspired by their parents' dedication to community service, the brothers established the scholarship to support their alma mater's efforts to develop and encourage student leaders.
