ANNVILLE, PA (03/18/2014)(readMedia)-- A cooperative internship program between Lebanon Valley College and the Lebanon School District was recognized Wednesday, March 12 by the PA Association of School Business Officials (PASBO). Accepting the Award for Achievement was Kelly Herr, assistant business manager for the Lebanon School District, and Tami L. Barton, LVC assistant professor of accounting.

Barton and Herr established the Public Finance Internship Program for LVC business and accounting students in 2011, beginning with the Lebanon School District Business Office and later expanding to the Palmyra and Annville-Cleona School Districts. Eleven students have interned with these districts over the past three years.

"We sincerely appreciate that three area school districts are willing to provide our students with an opportunity to gain work experience as well as insight into the office environment as a two-credit internship," Barton said. "These internships easily fit into the schedule of our students with an accounting or business major because the school districts have been extremely flexible in scheduling the working hours around the students' course commitments."

The PASBO Award of Achievement program is presented as a way to share successes with the membership at the conference, which attracts nearly 2,000 school district officials from across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

"I am certainly proud of the work Professor Tami Barton has done in making sure that our students can learn about public financial management by working with the Lebanon School District staff," said LVC president Dr. Lewis Evitts Thayne. "Once again the partnership between the Lebanon School District and the College is providing both institutions with a better experience for our students."

Dr. Marianne T. Bartley, superintendent of the Lebanon School District, represented her district at the PASBO conference and said she also was proud of this accomplishment. "The quality of the LVC students participating coupled with their desire to learn more about public financial management has proven to be a highly successful partnership for our county," she said.
