ANNVILLE, PA (01/15/2013)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College will conduct a series of conversations about the Jersey Shore in preparation for an alternative spring break trip to clean up and rebuild the area devastated by Hurricane Sandy. The first conversation, "Down the Shore: A Brief Guide to the Shore," will take place Tuesday, January 22 at 11 a.m. in the lobby of Miller Chapel.
The conversations are free and open to the public and pizza will be provided. Community guests should register by calling 717-867-6135 or emailing nsmith@lvc.edu.
The first "Down the Shore" event will be led by David Shapiro '99, LVC director of information technology services and a native of the Jersey Shore. He will present a brief, multimedia overview of the affected area and its history.
"I expect that we are going to have our eyes opened to the seriousness of the situation once we get there," said Paul Fullmer, LVC chaplain and director of community service. "The impact of being at the site of such natural disasters is invariably life-changing."
Thirty-five LVC students will travel with volunteers from the Camp Hill-based volunteer organization Lend A Hand to assist with recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy during their spring break in early March.
"Students will give up five full days of their Spring Break for the trip," Fullmer continued. "Many won't have an opportunity to get home before classes begin again. It is quite a sacrifice, but the students on the trip are passionate about making a difference."
