DANVILLE , IL (01/31/2014)(readMedia)-- Lakeview College of Nursing has promoted Sheila Mingee to the position of president. She succeeds Dick Shockey, who has served as chief executive officer for the College since 2005.
Mingee has worked in various capacities at the College since 1989. She has held the positions of administrative assistant to the dean and president, resource assistant, director of administrative services and facilities management, and associate chief executive officer.
"The biggest changes that I have experienced at Lakeview College of Nursing are the growth in enrollment and technology. It has been great to be a part of the College's growth and I am looking forward to its continued success," Mingee exclaimed.
She added, "I feel very honored to be the new president of Lakeview College of Nursing as the College enters into the 120th year of educating professional nurses."
Mingee mentioned that one of her biggest challenges in her new role will be to re-assign some of her responsibilities. "I'm so used to doing so many different things for the College there will need to be a period of transition," said Mingee.
During the next year, Mingee plans to focus her efforts on student achievement and success, relationship building, organization and communication, and professional development. "We are always striving to improve every aspect of the College so that it will continue to attract quality students, faculty and staff," explained Mingee.
It is bittersweet for Mingee taking the leadership role. She says she already misses working with Shockey on a daily basis. "Dick has been a wonderful mentor. He has accomplished so much for Lakeview during his tenure. His great humor will also be missed," said Mingee.
While Shockey was at the helm the College had a 17 percent increase in the amount of scholarships awarded to students and has had over a 99 percent increase in enrollment. Expansions at both the Danville and Charleston College locations were also completed.
Shockey said that Lakeview could not have experienced all of these things without significant backing. He explained, "LCN has an excellent board of directors and they have been very supportive of Lakeview endeavors."
With some excitement for the future of Lakeview, Shockey mentioned that Mingee should do very well as president. "She has the knowledge and college experiences to succeed," he said.
Mingee holds an associate degree from Danville Area Community College, a bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University (EIU), a master's degree in education from EIU and a master's degree in business administration from Capella University.
Shockey has now retired for the second time from higher education. Prior to accepting the Lakeview position, he served as vice president of finance and administration at Danville Area Community College, where he was employed from 1989-2005.
During his retirement, Shockey plans to continue some of the activities he has been involved with over the years such as directing the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Men's Basketball Tournament for DACC and serving on the Palmer Arena's board of directors. He will also continue employment on a part-time basis at Lakeview College of Nursing as a building consultant.
Shockey is hoping that he will now have more time to spend with his family, especially his granddaughter, Rowan, and a new grandbaby that is expected to be born in May of this year. He resides in Danville with his wife, Jane Ellen. Shockey's son, Rhett, resides in O'Fallon, IL, with his family.
Mingee resides in Georgetown with her husband, Russ, and two children, Tristyn and Kaden. They also have two grown children, Brittni O'Hair and Josh Mingee, and two grandchildren, Keagen O'Hair and Rylee Mingee.
Lakeview College of Nursing has provided excellence in nursing education since 1894. Currently, Lakeview offers a bachelor of science in nursing degree program in Danville as well as Charleston, IL, and has an enrollment of 312 students.
