Lawmakers, Advocates to Announce New Research Showing Long Islanders Could Save $164 On Bills w/ NY HEAT Act!

LONG ISLAND, NY (03/07/2024) (readMedia)-- TODAY, Assembly Member Taylor Darling will join with fellow lawmakers, residents and advocates at a press conference to share new data from WIN Climate and NY Renews showing how much Long Island residents could save on energy with the NY HEAT Act (A4592-B / S2016-B). As the Long Island Power Authority begins phasing in gas rate hikes that will raise energy bills by an average of 11.6% more each month, NY lawmakers have an opportunity to protect families by passing the HEAT Act in the budget and putting a limit on household utility bills to 6% of a family's income.

The NY HEAT Act would protect families' wallets and reduce future rate hikes like the ones underway by LIPA and Con Edison. It will also kickstart New York's transition from the outdated, expensive fracked gas system accelerating the effects of climate change and damaging Long Island communities. Governor Hochul embraced key parts of the HEAT Act in her Executive Budget proposal, and now lawmakers have an opportunity to provide relief for New Yorkers by including the full bill in their one-house budgets.
