Lawmakers Take Hot, Broke Summer Ice Cream Tour to Queens; Fight Rising Energy Bills & Climate Change

AMs Mamdani, Raga, Cruz, González Rojas, & Anderson, + Sens Salazar and Liu to call on Gov to include NY HEAT Act in 2024 Executive Budget

QUEENS, NY (08/15/2023) (readMedia)-- New Yorkers are living through extreme weather event after extreme weather event, and are stuck paying increasingly expensive utility bills thanks to ConEd rate hikes during another hot, broke summer. Following the kick-off in Brooklyn, elected leaders will hand out ice cream across Queens to build support for the NY HEAT Act that could reduce energy bills statewide while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. NY HEAT, which gained serious momentum during Albany's 2023 legislative session and passed in the NYS Senate, will stop expansion of the fracked gas system, and save the average low or middle income New Yorker $75/month on their utility bills. On top of the $75 monthly savings, NY HEAT gets rid of the unfair 100-foot rule, which forces New York families to subsidize new gas hookups to the tune of $200 million every year while accelerating fossil fuel generated climate change that supercharges storms and heat, and turned the sky orange this spring.

Electeds will give out free ice cream and educate New Yorkers about how they can save money on energy and save the planet by showing their support for NY HEAT and signing a petition. Come chill with NY HEAT on Wednesday, August 16 at the following locations:

  • 10:15 - Astoria (Broadway between 23rd and 29th St) with Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani
  • 1:00 P.M. - Ridgewood (Seneca Ave M Subway Stop, Seneca Ave between Gates Ave and Woodbine St) with Senators Michael Gianaris and Julia Salazar
