ANNVILLE, PA (03/29/2011)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College will show The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) at the Allen Theatre on Apr. 19 at 6 p.m. Tickets are free for LVC students; $1 for non-LVC students; and $3 for the general public. The film is part of the College's Colloquium series on HEALTH.
Directed by Julian Schnabel, the film tells the true story of Elle editor Jean Dominique Bauby, who suffered a stroke in 1995 and was almost completely paralyzed with the exception of his left eye. Bauby, played by Mathieu Amalric, uses that eye to blink out his memoir, and describes the psychological torment of being trapped inside his body and imagined stories from lands he visited only in his mind.
The film was nominated for four Oscars including best cinematography, best directing, best editing, and best writing for a previously published or produced screenplay. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was originally published in France under the title Le scaphandre et le papillon.
HEALTH is a year-long integrated series of guest speakers and films that highlight and inform the various factors involved in society's consideration of its health policy. It will involve discussions on the politics of health care reform, sickness, aging, fitness, mental and eating disorders, and spiritual well-being involving thinkers and speakers from the sciences, arts, and public policy.
